Warhammaganza!

by br3ntbr0

*edit: sorry for the repost, I accidentally deleted this in my post NDA publishing frenzy *

Three cheers for the NDA going away!!! I can now speak freely about this game, and believe me I have alot to say. Let me set the tone first by saying that I really do love this game and feel that it fits my play style and what I want out of an MMO very well. I'm really liking this game and have high hopes for it, but I won't give my full review of the game just yet, I still have alot to do and experience before I try to put that together. Besides, I think all the beta video I've captured and narrated speaks alot to how I feel about the game to begin with anyway. Its nearly all good, but I'm trying to temper my excitement in case there are any disappointments looming that I have not yet discovered. Outside of a new crash to desktop (CTD) bug that was introduced in closed beta patch 3.3, the stability of the game has been superb. By the time you read this I expect that to have been resolved anyway.

But before I begin the Warhammaganza festivities I just want to talk for a moment about all the sacrifice I've made during my time in the Warhammer Online closed beta for you. Yes you, my dear faithful reader. I've spent countless hours capturing, encoding, narrating, editing and uploading a plethora of videos for your enjoyment. I could have been doing much better things with my time, but I sacrificed for you. So please enjoy these, and if you don't, shut the hell up about it cause the complaint department isn't open.

Ok the paragraph above is a joke. I did spend alot of time making these mini video blog posts, but I had alot of fun making them. I didn't mind spending my beta time in reporting mode because I still want to have alot to explore and learn once the game starts. Between playing with the various classes to try and determine what I want to play come launch time, I just did some videos to cover the basics of the classes I picked to cover. I'm trying not to put up any videos that are unnarrated (unless they just don't require me telling you what's going on in the video) because the whole point of these videos is to give you my take on what I am experiencing.

Now that the NDA is lifted I'm going to put up the videos I already have done immediately. I will be bringing the yet to be completed videos up as soon as possible, leaving placeholders where I can. If I see someone else has some great videos that are very good for a certain class, I may not put those up. For example, I have a feeling that The Greenskin is going to have some killer vids on Shaman, Squig Herders and Black Orcs so I might wait to put up my videos covering those classes.

Before you go on and view these videos, I'll give you some background on them. I started out in beta in patch 3.2, and there were no templates available. Mythic provided character templates to testers so that you could make higher level characters and test them without having to spend the hours needed to level them up. This provided the easiest way to test higher level content with multiple level classes. I was in beta patch 3.2 for about 2 weeks in which time I leveled up a Bright Wizard, Witch Hunter, Black Orc and Squig Herder to level 10. I got video on 3 of these 4 classes, showing everything from character creation and early quests to open RVR and scenarios. During this time I played the Bright Wizard the most, and he's the first one I decided to begin shooting videos with. So, I tell you this to explain why the Bright Wizard may have the most video completed as of the time of this posting. He was just the first toon I started with.

Right as I finished with the first series of Bright Wizard videos patch 3.3 in closed beta hit. This patch introduced templates, allowing us to make a level 31 character in a starter gear set with about 20 gold for testing the Tier 4 content. I immediately prioritized any new video I could make from this to be of higher value than the early game stuff. So most of what you'll see in these videos are of me taking various classes out to the closest Tier 4 keep under their control, buying his renown rank 16 gear, dying said gear various colors, riding a mount, and sometimes reviewing their skills and game play mechanics. My thought was that I'd start with a basic video of each and then upload some detailed videos about game play mechanics, RVR and PVE impact of the class, etc. I do have alot of RVR and scenario footage to produce for a few of the classes, and I'll get that out asap. P.S. Don't expect to see 1337 skillz in PVP, I don't claim to be great and learning a new game doesn't help my cause either.

If my narration annoys you there is a simple fix: mute. You might still be able to get something from the videos by just watching if you want to do it that way. My process was to play the game and fraps what I was doing, then I narrated the video while re-watching it in windows movie maker later in a kind of "play by play" style. I tell you that to apologize for the numerous blunders I make in the videos, sometimes calling things by the wrong name or the timing of the narration in general. Also, I play on a 2 year old machine with a 7600 Nvidia graphics card. You will see some screen stuttering, especially in the larger RVR fights. But, most of this was shot with the settings on high to show the detail as best I could. Lastly, all this video is available in the standard streaming quality or in high quality at a larger viewing size if you want to download them from Filefront. The link to the area where all my videos are going to be hosted is http://hosted.filefront.com/v00d00de and you can just click the WAR folder to start browsing what I have available. I'd suggest looking here on this site prior, because I will do some brief set up and introduction on the videos to help explain them better on this site.

A final note on my narration. If it sounds kind of drab and dull at times, like I'm half asleep, that's because I probably was half asleep. With a full time job, wife and kid, late at night is the only time I could do these. So if you are expecting to be entertained by a witty narrator you might be disappointed. I went back and watched nearly all of these videos, and I do apologize as most of them sound like I am about to fall dead asleep while playing. In the future I will try and be mindful of that and stop trying to do video production until the weekend when I can do it at a reasonable hour.

Ok, the blog title "A Wall of Text" has been earned yet again with this post. A final note worth mentioning: if you don't see your fav class listed here, I'm sorry. I probably wasn't interested in it enough to invest the time to cover it, or just didn't have the time. If you want to click on a few thousand of those Google adsense links to the right, perhaps I'll get paid enough to warrant doing them all :) Anything labeled with a "Coming soon" means that I probably have the raw AVI fraps video on my hard drive just waiting for me to produce it into something net worthy but I haven't had time to get to it yet.

Without further delay, many of the links in the new Warhammagana menu on the upper right side of this page should now be active!

Love the videos, the narration is great. Not sure what's up with all the clothing color changing, but the bright wizard RVR and blackout RVR videos were a blast to watch. Good work.
