Warhammer Online: a new hope for open RVR

by br3ntbr0

WAR is a brand new mmorpg and has its fair share of issues, like any new mmorpg would. Its not for everyone, and takes a certain mindset to enjoy it fully. If you like heavily PVE focused games like EQII, WoW, etc...there's a good chance that WAR just won't feel right for you. Yes, I know that EQII and WoW have vibrant PVP, but those games weren't built around PVP. They were built around raids and dungeons, not city and fortress seiges.

PVP games take some getting used to
I played WoW for over 3 years on a PVP server, which was a stretch for me after playing EQ, EQII, SWG, etc. I think SWG lit the PVP fire inside me initially (back when PVP was somewhat decent in that game) and made the decision to roll on a PVP server easier. Even when I started WoW I was a PVE guy on a PVP server, I liked and wanted to raid. It wasn't easy...there were days when I got ganked that I wanted to punch a hole in the wall or just thought that I made a horrible mistake rolling a toon on that kind of server. After you die enough you get over the "OMG he just killed me" shock and you take it all in stride. If you can't realize that alot of PVP death is ok and that you'll just get flat out owned alot, you'll never be able to stomach a PVP server or a PVP game like WAR. WAR is new and has balance and bug issues to deal with also.

I understand that people tried it and may be going back to try out other games now for a variety of reasons. The free month is over, it wasn't what they thought it would be, they miss their old game, WAR still needs improving, etc, etc. WAR isn't for everyone, especially being only a month old and definitely if you try to play it like you played WoW or EQ or whatever other game you used to play. WoW specifically is familiar to people and has a monster expansion coming up, I feel the draw to go back and check it out too. I'm not going to bash on anyone that leaves, but WAR just fits me like a glove and I want to stick with it as long as things improve.

Scenarios...a problem?
A few of the many issues that Mythic has to deal with are scenarios and server populations. Scenarios are really good in WAR, I happen to like them alot. Most of the time (when full teams load in) you get a fair fight (aside from level discrepancies) and don't lose just because the other team can zerg you with bigger numbers of players. There are objectives to learn and a point to the game play. Once you learn how to play a given scenario it is a quick and instantly gratifying mini game that shows your performance when its over. It rewards very high amounts of renown and experience. All good stuff, but that previous sentence is the kicker.

Scenarios are so popular that people opt for them at the expense of open rvr skirmishing, leaving many players feeling alone in the world...not what you want in an RVR focused game. This is primarily because much of the player base is still leveling up and need experience to get to the next level. Playing scenarios is just the most efficient way to do that right now. Debating human nature in mmo's aside, its just a fact that most players are opting for scenarios over other content in the current state of WAR. Mythic is aware of the issue and has taken some steps to beef up open RVR, and they will probably do more to help make RVR feel more rewarding than scenarios do so that players participate more.

Server maturity
I think that with these changes, coupled with the player base approaching tier 4, that things will pick up for open RVR in Warhammer. Like I've said before its a different game and so much of it relies on the players, not scripted PVE events the developers have made. While yes, there is an element of that in WAR (king encounters, etc), the focus is open RVR and it unforunately won't get too much better for most people until they hit max level in tier 4. Tier 4 is the current stopping point, so all the folks that leveled up fast will be finally meeting up with all the slowpokes and people won't be so spread out RVR wise. Sadly, this might put WAR in the same place as other games where the fun really begins at max level.

Better things on the horizon
I'm not preaching doom and gloom. I think that the player base is beginning to shake out, and the players that are really serious about RVR are here. More servers than just the initial highly populated ones will begin to light up in tier 4 if they haven't already. The leveling game will subside and the real meat and potatoes of city seiges will be the order of the day. No one will care that scenarios offer great xp as most people will be at max level. Server transfers should help with populations. Two more classes are coming to the game soon, then two more (one of them new?) after that. I see some good things ahead for open RVR and WAR in general.

Scenarios also offer a way to get into the action quicker than oRvR. If I have 1 hr to play, I don't want to spend 30min finding the fight.

If open RVR were more prevalent though, wouldn't it be as easy as flying to the closest contested zone to jump right in? Praag was a hotbed for RVR in beta, and it can be that way on all servers again I think. I actually thought this was the quickest way to get into the action, provided the environment was right.

On my server (Helmgart EU) people just make oRvR if they raid a fort. And u don't raid a fort alone so they go with their guild, what takes time again until every1 got his @$$ there. And MAYBE the other site will see that and will try to help the npc's to defend the fort. And then u got a oRvR fight. I'm talking about T1 and T2.
But as Werit said, i don't have the motivation to go alone in a RvR zone just too look if I maybe find an enemy...
I hope that it's going to be better too. :/

What new class is maybe coming then? I thought it was just going to be the Blackguard and the Knight of the Blazing Sun? Maybe Hammerer/Choppa?
More classes = More fun

Woops. I corrected that statement to say that two are coming, then two more after that and one of those might be new. Rumor has it that the Slayer might replace the hammerer!

On the server that I am leveling my destro toon on, the past week I have been getting into some pretty good t2 open RvR raids. Usually it starts out with a small Order group attacking a keep or objective, then everyone running to stop them, then grouping and just moving from RvR spot taking anything that is Order... I hope this will happen more often and on all servers once they beef the rewards in open RvR.

And they announced that either the Hammerer or Chopper will be released when they are ready, but only one of them will be released, and one will be replaced with a new class. Like brent said.

It's nice to see something other than negative only comments on scenarios. I greatly enjoy scenarios but I would love to see more RvR. I have only had the opportunity to participate in a couple keep seiges and that was only becuase i happened to be in the area. Some better communication tools would be nice expecially for those of us that aren't in a guild (or a larger guild) to get involved without wandering aimlessly looking for a fight.

Great Stuff, I always have the feeling the hammerer will be some kind of slayer. Hammerer alone seems too shallow for the Dwarfs. I hope the Melee DPS archetype stays the same though, Dwarfs/Greenskins need some heavy dpsers. More cannon fodder to heal for my shaman ftw!

Scenarios are great for players like me who don't have allot of time to play and want to get into the action!

I can relate to the first paragraph as I also played WoW on a PvP server and it was my first real experience with PvP. Even though a lot of people complained about it, I loved the natural PvP wars that used to erupt in WoW. My guild would go around starting fights in Alliance outposts. But eventually Battlegrounds were born and the game went downhill from there for me.

I enjoy scenarios sometimes and they are good when you don't have much time to play. But they shouldn't be all there is to the game, it is making it too shallow right now.

I hope you are right Brent about the future. People in my guild are too spread out in level right now but I'm hoping in a month or so we have enough T4'ers to finally get some regular RvR going.

Boy is it going to be a pain leveling any alts though. The journey from 1 to 40 is probably going to keep getting shorter.
