What does World of Warcraft's Wrath of the Lich King offer me?

Tankenstein on Deathwing sez hi!
Tankenstein on Deathwing sez hi!
That was the first question I asked myself when I decided several weeks ago that I probably would buy WotLK to at least try it out. Despite the fact that it seems to fundamentally more of the same, I think there are enough interesting tweaks to get me to explore it to see if it makes enough difference for me to want to play more. I've been playing Warhammer Online for months now (all the way back to closed beta) and have hit a slow patch with the game. I'm still logging on almost nightly to WAR, but I'm really just waiting for things to pick up there. I split my time now between WAR and WoW, and lately the split has leaned more toward WoW because of the new expansion. So when I thought about it, I came up with a short list of things that intrigued me enough about woW's latest expansion, and why I thought I'd give it a good look:

Hunters and arenas
I mainly played 2 classes in WoW during my first 3 year tour with that game, a hunter and a druid. I raided ALOT with both of them (old school MC & BWL cleared in one night type of raids) and I also PVP'd alot with them (mainly the hunter) in arenas. I think the arenas were what eventually drove me nuts about WoW. I just got so tired of playing a class that was gimped in arenas, and pretty much required perfect and miraculous play to compete at a high level. I'm not a complete scrub either, I managed to get a Challenger title every season I played. Yeah, I know...that's not a whole lot to brag about, but I've been past the 1700 rating before (with a marks hunter and resto shaman in 2v2) so its at least above average play there. My Druid was more suited for arena's though, but I didn't enjoy playing a class that was constantly pressured to run away, the play style just wasn't for me, I really just liked the hunter class for everything but arenas in the end. I obviously hated any melee dps class as they had an innate advantage in small scale combat like arenas. And don't get me started about the exploits in arenas that quickly gave teams lots of gear that they used in order to dominate poor slobs like me. That was fixed to some extent, but the damage was already done. I could go on for quite a while about my issues with hunters and arenas, so I'll get to the point...

Death Knights
You've read about WoW's first hero class enough to make you want to vomit, I'm sure. I won't give you a breakdown of the class right now, so you are spared that for the moment. But to me, the Death Knight has significance for other reasons besides the uniqueness of the class. The Death Knight is my opportunity to play a melee dps class without having to start at level 1, and that's a big draw to me. Leveling is alot easier in WoW than it used to be. I'm already level 60 after only a few hours of playing my DK, and 10 levels in Outland won't kill me since I'm not rushing things anyway. This could be something that makes arenas and WoW's PVP fun for me again, we'll see. The Death Knight is my way of getting to have more fun in arenas (and PVP in general) than I did with my hunter. And after all, its shiny and new and keeps me wanting to know what the fun at level 80 will be like. Right now, I am enjoying the mundane task of leveling him pureley through PVE means. My Death Knight is named Tankenstein, and he's on the Deathwing server at the moment if anyone wants to say hi :)

Lake Wintergrasp
I look forward to getting to play in this new playground, mainly because I want to see if it has any positive impact on WoW's overall PVP. If it is insanely fun and populated, it could bring back the element of open world PVP that has long vanished from Azeroth. I've read a few general chat comments to the effect of "Lake Wintergrasp is awesome!", but I'll be the judge of that, as I'll take no person's word for it until I'm mowing people down with a shredder myself...and enjoying it.

New arenas and a new battleground
I'm anxious to see if these new arenas are worth a flip or not. I don't want to read other people's reviews on them solely, I want to experience them myself. There seem to be some unique tweaks made to these, like rising up from the floor to start, moving parts, etc. I'm sure the new battleground will be nice for a while, but after playing Warhammer Online and having 3-4 times the amount of mini games to choose from, I'm sure I'll be wishing that Blizz would focus on PVP some more and add still more battlegrounds and arenas, and if its a success, more Lake Wintergraspish stuff.

Smaller group focus on PVE
I was pleasantly suprised by the dungeons in Warhammer Online. I totally expected them to be crap. While they are really good, they just aren't on par with WoW. After all, no one will argue that WoW is the PVE king, and they make the best instanced dungeon content than anyone else. They are still a little too time consuming for my taste, but not a bad alternative for a day when I'm home alone and get to slack off all day. I will probably never see the end game raids, but there's an off chance I might see the 10 man versions one day. Still, PVE stuff is not my priority most days but it is good to know there's some quality stuff out there if I am able to check it out, and I don't need 40 or even 25 people to do it.

Crafting
Believe it or not, this is a good side track for me in mmo's. When I'm just tired of PVP, don't want to crawl a dungeon and just want to relax I can work on gathering materials and making stuff. Warhammer's crafting is abysmal and left a small gap for me there. While WoW's crafting isn't the best in the world either, there's certainly alot more to it (and the server economy as a whole) than there is in Warhammer.

Summary
I'm not really typing this up to compare WAR to WoW, but just to give some perspective on what the new expansion has for me. If it turns out that I find full time happiness with WoW somehow (doubtful), I'll probably give my thoughts on why I left WAR. I sincerely doubt this happens though, because I feel that Mythic will really breathe some new life into the game by the end of 2008. For now, I'm playing both games. I'm not a big fan of giving 15 bucks a month to a company while I wait for improvements, but Mythic has earned at least 1 month of that for their outstanding work so far. After all, I still need to inch my way closer to 40 there. In the end, I'm an ex WoW guy, who is now a WAR guy, but is checking out the new WoW stuff.

WoW is one of the worst games I have ever played. I don't know what anybody sees in it. It'd take me a long time and a massive wall of text to tell you why it's such a horrible game, but I shouldn't have to do that, it should be obvious.

I'm at the same stance as you are right now (WAR guy-checking out new WoW stuff) but for what i've experienced so far, Blizzard didn't put much effort in to thinking up WotLK. I think blizzard released it too soon in an attempt to keep WAR from taking to many subscribers. For now I guess I will stick with WAR because it's something new :)

Wow has its momnets. the Lore, classes, and massive world. In fact WOW was my first MMO ever. It was addicting but after a year I felt it was the same boring grind for better gear.

TBC came out and there were no new classes. Sure they brought in new races/areas to explore with but it was the same thing with no new classes. why play a hunter for the BE when you have played it already as an Dwarf or NE?

When WOTLK was announced I thought Id try WOW for a month again just to see if I wanted to come back. I don't - even if there is a new class. I think if they brough one of the most requested class style (Necromancer) I would still not come back.

WAR for me is fresh and interesting sure it has lots of problems. but I'm having fun with so many different classes I'm sure I will find myself playing for a while. So I guess I'm a WAR guy not even thinking of going back to WOW.

I think I will be sick to my stomach if the guy/blog that sold me on the Bright Wizard departs for WOW pastures. Can I call you a Judas in advance? Just in case you split and I don't notice immediately because you're playing on the bad side...err...Destruction side of COW?? (insert joking since you don't know me well) *smile*

Seriously, I hope you stick around. Your blog and videos were a breathe of fresh air and inspiration during the BETA. Oh my, I'm getting depressed thinking about the folks leaving WAR - or even tiptoeing away to play WOW.
