World of Warcraft: the Death Knight effect

This guy's handywork is everywhere.

As some of you know, I've pretty much exclusively played a Death Knight since my return to WoW after the release of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion and abandoned my beloved hunter. I've been very satisfied to this point with the Death Knight and the expansion overall, and have not yet regretted my decision to come back. However, things are different in more ways than playing an improved expansion, and there are things to get used to.

Most guilds don't want Death Knights
To this point, its been a huge swing away from PVP for me. I've even started to get crazy enough to wonder if I should focus on finding a decent guild and give the 10 man raid content a try. I'm still guildless, and that hasn't bothered me to this point. I've had a few offers from startup guilds, but definately not from any established guilds. Granted, I haven't applied to any guilds either, so that is the more likely reason for my being guildless. But is it really? Most guilds on Deathwing explicitly state that they are not accepting Death Knights, and my guess is that its like this on all servers. Guilds have their quota on DK's and don't want any more, and the servers are teeming with them. I think its even more clearly illustrated when one enters a battleground and 40% of the players in any given match are Death Knights. For a guy like me, this eliminates alot of guild options and I remain guildless for now. I think many others just join small guilds, stay guildless, or just get relegated to alt status for the most part.

Shortage of healers
The other thing I've noticed is the lack of healers in all parts of the game. I find many, many less Paladin healers now. Retribution paladins are so deadly now that most are that spec, or protection for tanking. I've been told that its because Paladin healers are very weak now in comparison to the power of the Retribution or Protection specs, so many have converted. It seems that 80% of the Druids I come across are balance specced, going Moonkin form and doing their best mage immitation. What healing I do come across seems to be the 20% resto druids out there and a few priests. Between that and the multitudes of people that left behind healing classes for making a Death Knight, and there seems to be a healing shortage. This cripples battleground play, as the side with more/better healing usually prevails. It also makes it difficult to fill out pick up groups for instance runs.

Post 80 as a Death Knight: PVE or PVP?
I have yet to figure out exactly what my play style is going to be. Before Warhammer, my play in WoW was spent in PVP 99.8% of the time. Between 2v2/3v3/5v5 arenas and battlegrounds and a herioc dungeon run now and then, my WoW calendar was pretty full. Recently, its been heroic dungeon runs and battlegrounds, with much less spent in the arenas. This change happened for a few reasons. Wow's 5 man dungeon's don't require huge time investments and the group of 5-6 people I play with regularly can do those pretty easily. I even acquired a tanking set so that I can tank the heroics when our normal tank isn't available. Arena gear really seems more out of reach to alot of players than it ever has before. No longer can you toil around at a sub 1500 ranking and eventually get most of the gear. Any decent arena gear requires a rating over 1600. I think some people have just completely reverted to PVE gear acquisition efforts because of this. And finally, the Nightfall battlegroup has not impressed me to this point from a PVP standpoint.

The post 80 game for me consists of getting the minimum 10 arena games per week for points, running 5 man dungeons with the small group of friends I have, crafting and gathering and tweaking my talents. The Death Knight talents are very well balanced, and I've agonized over finding the spec I enjoy the most to the point that I've probably blown at least 1000 or more gold on respec costs. I'll be posting more on that later, as it will probalby require its own wall of text. I'm also sure I'll have a more solid opinion on the post 80 game here soon enough, but the Wrath of the Lich King has definately begun to show the effect that Death Knights are having on the population.

As a priest, I don't pvp as I've read that the burst damage is so ridiculously high, that people aren't able to stay alive long enough regardless of their amount of resilience. I've seen blue posts confirming that Blizzard is aware of the problem.

As before, typically groups are either advertising for a healer or a tank so it seems dps is still the most popular class choice, but is that ever going to change?

Hope you have some luck finding a guild. Smaller guilds probably are the way to go, I'm in a small guild, we are pretty picky about who we invite and we actually have no DK's at the moment (as someone's main).

Hmmmmm... I guess those elite guilds are missing out on you in their guild because you are a DK. I would think they would welcome the PR. Their loss

I disagree, I am in a very well established raiding guild, and some of our best players are Death Knights. Death Knights are very versatile, and I would question a guild for not wanting to incorporate this versatility into their raids.

@Anonymous
I'm not saying its not good to have them, I just think that many guilds have taken in so many DK's already that they feel that they'll have problems getting them raiding spots, etc. so many may have closed recruiting to DK's because of the sheer number of them on most servers. Guilds can afford to be picky with DK's because of the large number from which to choose.

I concur with Br3ntbr0. I've also come back to WoW from WAR and been duoing 2 DKs (one frost one blood - they mesh well) with my other half. Great fun but most of the guild recruitment states no DK's. I play on a Euro RP server.

Still, when we get around to taking our druids up to 80 I expect my resto to be popular then!

I play two toons, one is a holy priest in a bleeding edge progression guild, and one is a prot pally in a casual family guild.

1) The first thing that strikes me is how much more willing people are to pug raid content in WOTLK compared to BC. I think this may have had to do with the fact that toward the end of BC on my server, guilds were openly pugging all content, up to Sunwell, so it allowed people to form cross-guild networks, and opened up the general population to the idea of taking down raid content with a pug. Even if you are unguilded, keep your ear to the ground in trade channel and wintergrasp- even though my pally only hit 80 last week, I was able to get in pug raids for 10 man archavon and 10 and 25 man sartharion this week, which were all super-fun to tank.
2) As for the healer shortage, I definitely notice the difference between being on my holy priest and being on my prot paladin. On my holy priest I can get a group going in no time, whereas on my paladin i'm usually waiting in LFM for an hour before being able to find a group. It's just how the game is right now.

People are right when they say pve epics are the new welfare epix.

What class do you go with when doing Arenas? Yeah you need at least 1600 to get the decent ones.

I recommend start pugging naxx10/25 with guilds that are just starting to check them out.

This is not the first time your experiences have mirrored my own. I put my Hunter aside to make a DK and I liked it so much I decided to make it my "main" for my guild. The problem was, there are just so many of us running around that competition to get into raids and even heroics within my guild is fierce. Granted, if I threw a fit they would get me in but that's just not my style, I like to get into raids on my own merits and not because I've been with the guild for years.

My main is a Druid. I was specced resto after I hit 80 but unfortunatley it is a total beating just to get dailies done. I love healing in BG's but can't afford to drop the gold everyday to respec. I finally had to go back to moonkin. Not really that bad but the BG's are hurting for healers I agree. When I am in tree form I'm like a celebrity or something. I can't wait for the duel spec, I really hope they move that along.

I actually did the opposite: got my resto shaman + prot war to 80, raided everything, healing and maintanking all bosses, got bored and switched to WAR. Received WAR just today, haven't played it since beta, so see how it goes :) Hope I don't get bored of it as fast as you guys.

We could always use DPS :) We are good on tanking DK's though I think. But you still need a guild anyway, a fun one. That will take you for who you are! FIGHT THE RIGHT OF DK's!
